Volvo Ocean Race in Boston

March 15, 2009: The Volvo Ocean Races is coming to Boston! The world’s most extreme yachting race is making its closest to New Brunswick stopover in the port of Boston in May. The round the world race takes the professional crews along the worlds trade routes, deep into the Southern Ocean and around the world’s most dangerous capes.

During the nine month 37,000 nautical mile race the2008-09 edition of the race starts Alicante, Spain in October 2008 and concludes in St Petersburg, Russia, during late June 2009 via Cape Town, Kochi, Singapore, Qingdao, around Cape Horn to Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Galway, Goteborg and Stockholm.

On Saturday May 9th, 2009 the Volvo Ocean race will bring the action to the spectators through the Boston In port Race. This will be a short windward-leeward race with a mid-course gate and triangular viewing area. Each leg will be two nautical miles making the racing tighter. There will be two races per day, conditions permitting, with two laps per race and a target time of 50 minutes and a total race time of two hours. The first race is scheduled to start at 13:00 hrs local time.
